On the trail of great pioneers. Vienna's art nouveau broke with conventions. We are continuing this turn-of-the-century style at Hotel Schani Salon with a modern twist.
Mariahilf, Vienna. Hotel Schani Salon nestles in the middle of the bustle of the largest shopping street in the world's most liveable city – a retreat with great history. We are located in a Viennese Jugendstil, art nouveau building dating back to the 1900s – this house was once the property of the Wittgenstein family. Viennese Jugendstil and it’s artists have continued to leave their mark – also at Hotel Schani Salon – now, just as back then.
Vienna has long played an important role and has always been one of the main centres of the art nouveau movement in Europe. This developed an avant-garde style in construction and design and introduced no one less than Otto Wagner to the world – a man who wrote history as a pioneer and artist in this new architectural movement. We have dedicated 24 rooms to the art of the Modern and New Modern, with selected accents. Art with "nouveau" if you will. As a result, you can find Otto Wagner, Egon Schiele, Sigmund Freud and Gustav Klimt – and his muse Emilie Flöge – in the studio, atrium and street rooms at our establishment.
In every Salon room you will find an individual artboard with Schani's well-known street plan, designed in close creative cooperation with artist Oskar Kubinecz. These unique pieces have been created using the Fin du Siècle as their inspiration and received a great deal of recognition last year. Hotel Schani Salon won the top prize at the HOTEL&DESIGN Awards in the category interior design. The awards are the brainchild of the magazine Fachmagazin für Hotellerie und Gastronomie and honour exceptional aesthetics and locations in contemporary planning, facilities and food and beverages on an annual basis.
In keeping with the Schani spirit, we like to look ahead, instead of just looking back. That's why we open up our lobby and the public areas of the hotel for contemporary artists to present their work in alternating exhibitions. That way we provide a space of creative exchange for young artists in the style of the classic Viennese salon.
