Hard to believe, but it’s time once again to get in the Christmas spirit with hot mulled wine and a rosy nose! By mid-November the first Viennese Christmas markets open, and thanks to the sparkling Christmas lights, the whole city glows in festive splendor. Vienna at Christmas time enchants us anew every year!
If you are wondering where to find the most magical spots in Vienna during Advent, keep reading! Here are our top tips to get even the biggest Grinch into the holiday spirit.
Admiring the Christmas lights in the city center
There is no better time to stroll through Vienna’s city center than during Christmas. The twinkling lights of the holiday decorations lend a magical charm to the historic backdrop, creating a wonderfully festive atmosphere. The lights in the areas of Graben, Kohlmarkt und Stephansplatz are especially magnificent. Some might find it too kitschy to be beautiful – but for us, it’s just the right amount of kitsch.
Eating roasted chestnuts
Our tip: be sure to try roasted chestnuts! Nothing beats this classic winter snack to warm you up while you wander through the festively decorated streets. Wondering where to find the best chestnuts? Just follow your nose – in Vienna, you’ll find chestnut vendors on nearly every corner during the chilly season, serving up these little treats fresh and hot.
Engelmann artificial ice rink
A true classic in Vienna, the Engelmann artificial ice rink in the 17th district was founded over 100 years ago as the world’s first open-air artificial ice rink and has been located on a rooftop since the 1970s. Here, you can glide across the ice high above the city, surrounded by festive, twinkling lights. The winter atmosphere and nostalgic charm of the rink make ice skating a unique experience – perfect for getting into the Christmas spirit.
Last but not least: Visiting Christmas markets
Conclusion: Pure Christmas magic in Vienna
So, put on your wool hat and gloves – it’s time for a festive stroll through Vienna. We wish you a peaceful Advent season and many beautiful moments in our favorite city!
